    Methodology & Source Notes

    We compiled this page in August 2026 from more than 25 named sources. Primary data has the most weight: BLS, Stack Overflow, SlashData, JetBrains/PSF, GitHub Octoverse, Indeed Hiring Lab, ZipRecruiter, and Dice. Marketplace “hire” pages show each platform’s own supply. Vendor benchmarks are directional. All figures are in USD unless marked.

    We re-checked index data for this edition. TIOBE figures reflect the July 2026 index. Statistics from 2026 publications: TIOBE (Jul 2026), ZipRecruiter and Salary.com (Jul 2026), Glassdoor and Indeed (2026), Indeed Hiring Lab (Jul 2026), PYPL (Feb 2026), and Arc.dev (May 2026). Others come from 2024-2025 data: BLS (May 2024), Stack Overflow (2025), SlashData (2025), JetBrains/PSF (fieldwork late 2024, released Aug 2025), and Octoverse (data through Aug 2025). Note: the Stack Overflow survey published in late 2025 is the latest edition. The next edition opened for responses in mid-2026 and has no published results yet.

    Two caveats. First, Korn Ferry’s 85.2M shortage projection is a 2018 study from before the AI shift. Read it as structural context. Second, AI’s causal role in the decrease of junior hiring is contested. The timing overlaps the 2022-2023 rate increases and layoffs. Rigorous studies disagree. We review this page quarterly. Figures update in place.

But demand moved to senior, AI-capable engineers. Senior roles caused 71% of the posting growth in the past year. Entry-level hiring decreased approximately 73%.
