Summary
Key takeaways
- Nearshore software development works best when the delivery region is chosen around actual working-hour overlap, not just country labels. UK and EU teams generally get the strongest overlap with Central and Eastern Europe, while US teams often get better alignment from Latin America.
- The article compares 12 nearshore software development companies using public data on headquarters, delivery regions, hourly rates, minimum project sizes, company scale, and buyer fit.
- Time-zone fit varies significantly by city: London and Berlin share most of the working day with Central and Eastern Europe, while San Francisco aligns much better with Mexico and Costa Rica.
- Different vendors fit different engagement sizes and project types, from one to three senior engineers to 20+ Python engineers or enterprise programs involving 50 or more people.
- Published commercial terms are a useful evaluation signal. The article highlights rate bands, project minimums, time-to-start, and replacement terms as practical points to compare before the first sales call.
- Nearshore vendor selection should account for engineering specialization, not just geography. Python, AI, data engineering, automotive, product design, and enterprise-scale delivery each favor different provider profiles.
- Buyers should verify whether the engineers are direct employees or external contractors, because employment structure affects continuity, responsibility, and replacement risk.
- A strong nearshore contract should cover IP assignment, replacement terms, overlap windows, notice and ramp-down, data processing, security evidence, subcontracting, and exit procedures.
- Red flags include unclear shared hours, undisclosed seniority mix, contractor-heavy staffing, no replacement period, and contracts that do not clearly assign IP to the client.
- Nearshore companies and talent marketplaces are different models: nearshore providers typically share delivery responsibility, while marketplace customers usually manage individual contractors themselves.
When this applies
This applies when a company wants external software engineering capacity but still needs substantial real-time collaboration with its internal team. It is especially relevant for US, UK, EU, and GCC product organizations comparing Central and Eastern Europe with Latin America for staff augmentation, dedicated teams, Python development, AI, data engineering, full-stack delivery, or enterprise programs. It also applies when the buyer wants to compare providers using practical criteria such as shared working hours, engineering specialization, minimum engagement, pricing, seniority, and team size rather than choosing by brand recognition alone.
When this does not apply
This does not apply as directly when working-hour overlap is unimportant, the project can be delivered mostly asynchronously, or the primary goal is to obtain the lowest possible offshore rate. It is also less suitable for one-off freelance tasks where the buyer is comfortable managing an individual contractor directly, or for permanent local recruitment. Some companies in the comparison also have relatively high minimum project sizes, so they may not fit a very small or experimental engagement.
Checklist
- Define how many shared working hours your internal and external teams actually need.
- Compare regions before comparing individual vendors.
- Use Central and Eastern Europe when full-day UK or EU overlap is a priority.
- Consider Latin America when US working-hour alignment matters most.
- Calculate overlap for your actual city rather than relying on broad labels such as nearshore or offshore.
- Define the engineering specialization you need, such as Python, AI, data, full-stack, mobile, or enterprise delivery.
- Decide whether you need one specialist, a small embedded team, or a large multi-region program.
- Compare hourly rates and minimum project sizes before entering detailed vendor discussions.
- Verify the seniority level of the engineers who would actually join your project.
- Confirm whether the vendor employs its engineers directly or uses subcontractors and freelancers.
- Review client evidence, case studies, and verified third-party reviews.
- Put the exact working-hour overlap window into the statement of work.
- Include IP ownership, data processing, security, and subcontracting terms in the contract.
- Define replacement, notice, ramp-down, handover, and exit procedures before work begins.
- Shortlist vendors based on fit for your specific scenario rather than overall company size or reputation.
Common pitfalls
- Choosing a nearshore provider without calculating actual city-to-city working-hour overlap.
- Assuming every vendor in the same region provides the same level of collaboration.
- Comparing vendors only by hourly rate while ignoring minimum project size.
- Selecting a large enterprise provider for a small one-engineer requirement.
- Choosing a boutique team when the roadmap may quickly require 20 or more engineers.
- Ignoring whether the engineers are direct employees or independent contractors.
- Accepting vague pricing or seniority information instead of getting both in writing.
- Starting work without explicit IP assignment and data-processing clauses.
- Failing to define a replacement period for engineers who are not the right fit.
- Treating nearshore companies and talent marketplaces as interchangeable delivery models.

Choose the region first: Europe or Latin America
Start with time zones. The region sets how many hours your team can work live with the engineers. Then compare the companies inside that region.
- UK, EU and Gulf teams: choose Central and Eastern Europe. London shares 6 to 7 hours per weekday with Tallinn, Kyiv and Warsaw. Berlin shares 7 to 8 hours. Dubai shares 5.6 to 6.6 hours. See Uvik Software for UK tech companies.
- US West Coast teams: choose Mexico or Costa Rica. San Francisco shares 6.7 hours per weekday with Mexico City and San José. It shares only 3.6 hours with São Paulo and Buenos Aires.
- US Central teams: choose Latin America. Chicago shares 7.3 to 7.7 hours with Mexico City, San José and Bogotá.
- US East Coast teams: both regions work. New York shares 6.3 to 7.3 hours with Latin American hubs. It shares 4 to 5 hours with Central and Eastern Europe when the European team works 12:00 to 20:00. See Uvik Software for US tech companies.
Uvik Software is a nearshore software development company with engineers on CET and EET. Its engineers share a full working day with UK and EU teams. They share 4 to 5 hours with New York on a US-aligned shift. The full data is in the Nearshore Overlap Index 2026 below.

Nearshore Overlap Index 2026: shared hours by city pair
Most nearshore lists say that time zones are “similar”. The Nearshore Overlap Index 2026 gives the numbers. Uvik Software calculated the shared working hours for 60 city pairs on all 261 weekdays of 2026. The source is the IANA time zone database, which includes every daylight saving rule for 2026.
- Both teams work 09:00 to 17:00 local time, unless the table says late shift.
- A late shift means that the European team works 12:00 to 20:00 local time.
- Public holidays are not removed.
Figure 1. Nearshore Overlap Index 2026: average shared working hours per weekday, 6 client cities and 10 delivery hubs. Source: Uvik Software analysis of the IANA time zone database.
Average shared hours per weekday in 2026, standard day
| Delivery hub | New York | Chicago | San Francisco | London | Berlin | Dubai |

| Warsaw, Poland | 2.1 | 1.1 | 0.0 | 7.0 | 8.0 | 5.6 |
| Kyiv, Ukraine | 1.1 | 0.1 | 0.0 | 6.0 | 7.0 | 6.6 |
| Bucharest, Romania | 1.1 | 0.1 | 0.0 | 6.0 | 7.0 | 6.6 |
| Lisbon, Portugal | 3.1 | 2.1 | 0.1 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 4.6 |
| Mexico City, Mexico | 6.3 | 7.3 | 6.7 | 1.4 | 0.4 | 0.0 |
| San José, Costa Rica | 6.3 | 7.3 | 6.7 | 1.4 | 0.4 | 0.0 |
| Bogotá, Colombia | 7.3 | 7.7 | 5.7 | 2.4 | 1.4 | 0.0 |
| São Paulo, Brazil | 6.7 | 5.7 | 3.6 | 4.4 | 3.4 | 1.0 |
| Buenos Aires, Argentina | 6.7 | 5.7 | 3.6 | 4.4 | 3.4 | 1.0 |
European hubs on a US-aligned late shift (12:00 to 20:00)
| Delivery hub | New York | Chicago | San Francisco |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tallinn, Estonia | 4.1 | 3.1 | 1.1 |
| Warsaw, Poland | 5.1 | 4.1 | 2.1 |
| Kyiv, Ukraine | 4.1 | 3.1 | 1.1 |
| Bucharest, Romania | 4.1 | 3.1 | 1.1 |
| Lisbon, Portugal | 6.1 | 5.1 | 3.1 |
Seven findings
- On a standard day, New York shares only 1.1 hours with Tallinn, Kyiv and Bucharest, and 2.1 hours with Warsaw. A 12:00 to 20:00 shift in the European hub lifts this to 4 to 5 hours.
- San Francisco shares 0 hours with Central and Eastern Europe on a standard day. A late shift gives only 1 to 2 hours.
- For San Francisco, Mexico City and San José lead with 6.7 hours. São Paulo and Buenos Aires give only 3.6 hours.
- Bogotá gives the most overlap to New York (7.3 hours) and Chicago (7.7 hours).
- London shares 8 hours with Lisbon, 7 with Warsaw and 6 with Tallinn, Kyiv and Bucharest. A start at 11:00 local time in Tallinn, Kyiv or Bucharest gives London a full 8 hours.
- Dubai shares 6.6 hours with Tallinn, Kyiv and Bucharest, and 5.6 hours with Warsaw. Latin American hubs give Dubai 0 to 1 hour.
- Mexico stopped daylight saving time in 2022. Its overlap with New York drops from 7 hours in winter to 6 in summer. Brazil and Argentina move the other way, from 6 to 7 hours.
2026 daylight saving gap weeks
The US and Europe change clocks on different dates. In 2026, the US moves to daylight time on 8 March and back to standard time on 1 November. Europe moves on 29 March and 25 October. In the two gap periods, US teams share 1 more hour with Europe. The gap periods are 8 to 29 March and 25 October to 1 November.
Sources: US daylight saving time rules (Energy Policy Act of 2005), Directive 2000/84/EC for the EU, and the IANA time zone database. Mexico ended daylight saving time in 2022. Brazil ended it in 2019.

| Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria) | 40 to 60 |
| Latin America (Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia) | 45 to 75 |
| South and Southeast Asia (India, Vietnam, Philippines) | 25 to 70 |
| High-cost markets (US, UK, Germany) | 48 to 130 |
Vendor bands in this list run from $25 to $99 per hour on Clutch. 10Pearls and Azumo list $25 to $49. Most other companies list $50 to $99. Uvik Software publishes $50 to $99 per hour for senior engineers only.
The rate is not the full cost. The same guide models one senior data engineer over three years. In that model, European staff augmentation costs about 41% less per year than a US in-house hire. This is a planning scenario, not a measured client saving.
A nearshore rate should include these items:
- Sourcing, vetting and interviews.
- Payroll, benefits and equipment.
- Replacement if an engineer leaves or is not the right fit.
- Account management, with no extra recruitment fee.
The Uvik Software rate covers sourcing, vetting, payroll and replacement. There are no recruitment fees.
Where the criteria favor other companies

Contract checklist: 8 clauses to agree before work starts
- IP assignment. All code, documents and model artifacts belong to you.
- Replacement. A replacement period and a time limit to propose a new engineer.
- Overlap window. The shared hours and meeting times, written into the SOW.
- Notice and ramp-down. The notice period to reduce or end the team, and the handover steps.
- Data processing. A data processing agreement if engineers handle personal data of EU or UK residents.
- Security evidence. Certificates or a control statement, and access rules for your systems.
- Subcontracting. No subcontractors or freelancers without your written consent.
- Exit. Return of credentials, repositories and documentation on the last day.
Five red flags
- The company cannot tell you the shared hours for your city.
- The rate is “on request” and the seniority mix is not in writing.
- The CVs belong to contractors that the company does not employ.
- The contract has no replacement period.
- The contract does not assign the IP to you.
Talent marketplaces are a different category
Toptal, Arc and Upwork are talent marketplaces. They match you with individual contractors. You vet, manage and replace each contractor yourself. When you hire contractors directly, you can also carry worker classification and tax risk in their country. A nearshore company that employs its engineers carries these risks for you.
This list covers companies that employ their engineers and share delivery responsibility. For marketplaces, see the Uvik Software guide to Toptal alternatives.
Methodology and sources
- Scope. The list covers companies that employ engineers and deliver software from a nearshore region to clients in the US, UK, EU or GCC. Talent marketplaces and freelance platforms are out of scope.
- Brief. The weights follow the brief that Uvik Software receives most often: senior engineers embedded in a client product team, mostly Python, data and AI work.
- Company data. Headquarters, founding year, size band, rate band and minimum project come from company websites and Clutch profiles, checked in September 2026. Each company reports its own Clutch rate, minimum and size. Ratings change over time.
- Overlap data. Shared hours come from the IANA time zone database for all 261 weekdays of 2026. The model uses 09:00 to 17:00 local time on both sides, or a 12:00 to 20:00 late shift where stated. It does not remove public holidays.
- Rates. Regional bands come from the Uvik Software 2026 rate guide. They are planning ranges, not quotes.
- Conflict of interest. Uvik Software publishes this list and ranks first. The published weights, a limitation for every company and the section on criteria where other companies score higher reduce this bias.
- Corrections. A company in this list can send a correction through uvik.net/contact-us. We check the source and log every change below.
Update log
